About the program:
Through its network of global and local experts, WRI Ross Center for Sustainable Cities supports city- and national-level change for people and the planet, focusing on integrated solutions to new and long-standing urban challenges, primarily in the Global South. The WRI Ross Center for Sustainable Cities’ Integrated Climate Action Programme is committed to accelerating the pace and scale of urban climate action through collaborative and integrated planning and implementation

Internship Highlight:
Reporting to WRI’s Global Director Urban Efficiency and Climate, you will support the implementation of WRI’s integrated climate action initiative collaborating closely with teammates based in The Hague, London, Sao Paulo and Cape Town.

We work to accelerate climate action in cities through supporting integrated planning and implementation and by fostering multi-level dialogue and coalition building. We work to ensure that all projects supported by the WRI Ross Center contribute to climate action that delivers integrated benefits for people, nature and climate.

You will contribute to projects across the team, providing project coordination support, research and stakeholder engagement with a particular focus on a series of innovative pilot projects accelerating strategic integrated climate action planning, implementation and mainstreaming.

You will conduct relevant research on how cities and other organisations track the wider economic, social and environmental benefits of climate action. You will also support the team in project management, researching funding opportunities for integrated climate action and coordinating concept and proposal development.

What you will do:

In this role, you will:

  • Conduct research to assess the extent to which city climate action efforts are aligned with the recommendations of the Integrity Matters for Cities States and Regions report(50%)
  • Conduct a literature review and engage with selected WRI colleagues to identify good practices and develop case studies on cities demonstrating integrated climate action (25%)
  • Coordinate a community of practice on integrated climate action in cities across WRI (15%)
  • Support project management and maintain various project trackers (we use Slack and Asana) (5%)
  • Provide day-to-day support to ICA team to schedule team meetings, draft concept notes and agendas and prepare meeting memos as appropriate (5%)

Your internship supervisor will be the Global Director, Urban Efficiency and Climate

What you will need:

  • Demonstrated passion for cities and climate
  • Strong project management and Microsoft Excel skills
  • Ability to manage multiple parallel tasks
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Currently pursuing a degree in science, engineering, policy, or related fields (graduate program preferred).
  • Interns at WRI Europe must be registered in a study program with a Dutch college or university for the full duration of the internship.
  • You are proficient in verbal and written English

Conditions of the internship:

  • This is a 4 to 6-month internship with a start date of 7 March 2024.
  • This internship will be based at the WRI Europe office in the Hague with some flexibility to work from home.
  • This internship offers a reimbursement of 700 euros per month based on full-time working hours (32 hours per week).
