1.     Organizational Context

 

 

a.    Organizational Setting

 

The post is located in the WIPO Academy in the Regional and National Development Sector.  The WIPO Academy is the core entity in WIPO for training and capacity-building activities, particularly for developing countries, LDCs and countries with economies in transition.  The Academy acts as an in-house center of excellence on training, including professional training; a catalyst for networks and partnerships to expand the range and impact of training opportunities at the national level; an open-access online clearinghouse of information on all WIPO training activities, tools and services; and a hub of a virtual network of partners, experts and teachers in development-oriented IP training.  Beneficiaries of the WIPO Academy services include decision-makers, government officials, officials of national intellectual property offices and societies for collective management of copyright and related rights, intellectual property practitioners, academics, students and other stakeholders.

 

b.    Purpose Statement

 

The incumbent contributes to the implementation and monitoring of the WIPO Academy's Intellectual Property Institutions (IPTIs) Program, which aims at creating and consolidating national/regional self-sustaining training capacities to build IP knowledge and skills on the ground. The program's three pillars of work are (i) the establishment of new IPTIs; (ii) the implementation of joint cooperation projects with established IPTIs; and (iii) the delivery of collective services and resources for the benefit of all IPTIs.

 

c.    Reporting Lines

 

The incumbent works under the supervision of the Head of the IPTIs Program.

 

 

 

2.      Duties and Responsibilities

The incumbent will perform the following principal duties:

 

a.       Assist in the preparation, implementation and monitoring of projects to establish new IPTIs, especially in Arab countries, by (ii) organizing training of trainers’ programs; (ii) overseeing the design and implementation of pilot skills-based programs to be offered in the future by the IPTI; and (iii) reviewing business plans prepared to guide the first years of the IPTI operation.

 

b.       Prepare responses, for review by the Head of the IPTIs Program, to new requests for cooperation and support the processes to assess IP education needs from requesting countries and pre-required conditions for the project implementation.

 

c.       Support the design and monitor the implementation of cooperation projects jointly implemented with established IPTIs, particularly from Arab countries.

 

d.       Participate in the elaboration of reports, briefing notes, and background documents on ongoing projects, by preparing first drafts, collecting data, and searching information, among others.

 

e.       Contribute to activities organized by the IPTI network, particularly for a wider promotion of the network in Arab countries.

 

f.        Support the launching of collective resources to address the common needs of IPTIs, particularly from the Arab Region.

 

g.       Provide logistical and substantive support for the organization of meetings with key contacts in the Member States, elicit information and feedback, and give presentations on the Academy and the project activities, as required.

 

h.       Perform other duties as required.

 

 

3.      Requirements

 

Education (Essential)

First-level university degree in international relations, political science, law, education, social science or another related field.

 

 

Experience (Essential)

At least three years of professional experience at the national and international level, including in the field of IP education.

 

Experience in IP training projects and adult learning activities.

 

Language (Essential)

Excellent written and spoken knowledge of English and Arabic.

5.      Information

 

Mobility:  WIPO staff members are international civil servants subject to the authority of the Director General and may be assigned to any activities, office or duty station of the Organization.  Accordingly, the selected candidate may be required to move from time to time to new functions and/or to another duty station.

 

Annual salary:

Total annual salary consists of a net annual salary (net of taxes and before medical insurance and pension fund deductions) in US dollars and a post adjustment.  Please note that this estimate is for information only.  The post adjustment multiplier (cost of living allowance) is variable and subject to change (increase or decrease) without notice.  The figures quoted below are based on the June 2024 rate of 88.5%

Salaries and allowances are paid in Swiss francs at the official rate of exchange of the United Nations.

Additional Information

 

* Initial fixed-term appointment of two years, renewable subject to satisfactory performance and other applicable conditions.  The selected candidate’s appointment will be subject to an overall term of five years in this position, with no possibility of renewal beyond that term.  S/he may, however, apply and be considered for other positions at WIPO.

This is not applicable to WIPO staff members on fixed-term, continuing or permanent appointments, who were recruited following a competition under Staff Regulation 4.10 (“Appointment Boards”).
